New Year Reminders

Mission & Vision

The mission of Heart to Heart is to respond to God’s commandment to love one another.

The vision of Heart to Heart is to model God’s love by:

  • Cultivating a loving community
  • Honoring individual gifts
  • Feeding bodies and souls

…and seeing everyone as a child of God.

Volunteer Covenant

We agree to foster a welcoming culture of kindness and respect that upholds the worth and dignity of every person, striving to listen with empathy, and use teamwork to carry out the mission and vision of Heart to Heart.

Tips & Tricks

Heart to Heart staff have implemented guidelines, processes and measures to ensure the safety of our workers, proper use of equipment, and best functionality. It is imperative to our operations for volunteers to adhere to these guidelines.

For instance, volunteers should avoid overloading shelves when stocking food. Each shelving unit can only hold a limited weight, distributed across the individual shelves. The weight limits differ by size and type of shelf. For guidance, please ask Yohan when stocking.

When items are misused causing damage, the pantry has to pay for the replacement. Every dollar spent on equipment is one dollar less that we are able to spend on food to feed our clients. Please keep this in mind when you are volunteering.

Special Skills

We understand not everyone can or wants to volunteer during our regular weekly shifts, but may still want to contribute to our overall success. Heart to Heart is on the lookout for a few volunteers with specialized skills to help with projects from time to time. Please let us know if you have a particular interest or are skilled in:

  • Woodworking, DIY, Building
  • Social Media
  • Community Advocacy
  • Elementary Education
  • One time assembly projects (eg. birthday bags)

While we may not have a related project in mind at the moment, these are some needs we have encountered over time and we would love to know who might be interested in helping with these things in the future. Have another skill or interest you think may be useful? Let us know!

Inclement Weather Plan

Winter is in full swing with extremely low temperatures and snowfall in the forecast. Now is the perfect time to review our inclement weather procedure.

Since Heart to Heart food pantry is an essential service for many, we will make every attempt to remain open during regular business hours if it is deemed safe to do so. Conversely, if we do not have appropriate volunteer staffing, we may have to close even when the offices remain open.

In the event we are closed, we will make note on our outgoing voicemail, on our Facebook and Instagram pages and on our webpage. Volunteers for the day will be notified by email as soon as a decision to close has been made. In other words: no news is good news!

We understand when volunteers don’t feel comfortable being outside or driving on roads in severe weather. Please let us know if you cannot make it to volunteer for your shift! If there are 24 hours or less before your shift, please email Yohan Kim to let us know.

Hair Care Drive

This Sunday, January 14, Heart to Heart volunteers will take donations during all worship services. While we will accept any donations, this month we focus on hair care items for all types of hair. Essential items such as shampoo, conditioner, and styling products are not only taxed, but not covered by SNAP benefits. These items are often cost-prohibitive, making them coveted in the drive-thru. Please consider making a donation of hair care products when you attend worship services this Sunday.

Monthly Collections During Worship

Heart to Heart food pantry will hold a once-a-month donation collection during Sunday worship services to promote material contributions for those attending First Community for worship. If you are attending services at North, please look for the donation station sign in the parking lot and drop off your donations before you come inside! If you’re attending services at South, please look for the donation cart at Crane welcome center, where you can drop off your donation with our volunteer. While we will advertise and encourage specific donations on a theme, we continue to accept all our typical donations! Click the image to download a printable PDF (or grab a flyer at either church campus) to hang on your fridge! We hope these fun themes will encourage donation participation.

What To Get and Where

Not all hair is the same! It’s important to know that different hair textures require different products, more than just shampoo and conditioner. I recently found this great resource online Tutus and Tennis ShoesAuthor and trained Cosmetology Instructor, Kanisha, provides guidance to families for families of transracial adoption to as they learn to care for their children’s hair. I encourage you to explore the site if for no other reason than to see all there is to learn.

This weekend, when choosing products to donate to our hair care drive, keep in mind Kanisha’s mission. Consider making a donation of hair care products you may not need yourself, like curl crème and hair masks. Of course, we will gladly accept your average shampoo and conditioner too!

For your convenience, we have included ads from major retailers with pertinent items currently on sale. Click the image to browse through the Facebook post for more info.

Donations Needed

Bring these items with you to worship this weekend, or click here for donation hours and instructions.

Important Note about Donations

While the pantry is closed, we cannot accept any donations, perishable or otherwise. Staff will not be present to take care of the donations. While we are grateful for the generosity of our neighbors, leaving donations outside will attract rodents and other pests. Please plan to deliver your donations when we reopen on January 2.

December 29 Mission Workday

Amy Caskie will lead a painting, moving and reorganizing in Lincoln Road Chapel, the Annex, and main church building. Volunteering will benefit many Missions of the church, including Heart to Heart, Trading Post, and Refugee Ministry.

One of the main jobs will be moving some Heart to Heart storage into the previous bookstore off Brownlee Hall. The other major job is painting a room in the FC Annex building. This effort will require many volunteers with varying abilities! This is a great opportunity for students to get service hours while they are off school for Winter Break.

Save the Date

Mark your calendars for our annual dinner to celebrate our volunteers and show appreciation for all their hard work. We will meet in the evening on Tuesday, February 6 in Grace Hall at FC North. Please be on the lookout for more information as we continue to make plans.

Thank you OSU Students

This week we say goodbye to the two OSU students doing their Semester of Service project at Heart to Heart. Colin and Maria were a great addition to our team, and we hear Maria might be back to help out next semester.

The good news is that come February, we have three new students participating in the program! Stay tuned for their introductions next month. Since the past semester was so successful, we are happy to welcome more students and hope this program will continue for some time!

Blanket Distribution

This Monday we were able to distribute comforters to our clients. These items were available through Mid-Ohio Food Collective as a one-time donation. Thank you to our Worship Technology team for capturing this video at the last minute!

$20,000 Match Update

Fantastic News! As of today we have raised $23,765 since November 1. That means we more than met our goal to raise $20,000 in two months. We are so grateful to Duke Thomas for matching these donations in memory of his late wife, Jill Thomas.

Of course, donations are still welcome. Please visit h2h.FCchurch.com/donate to make a contribution. Thank you to our donors!

Christmas Assistance Program

Thank you to everyone that donated gift cards to our Holiday Help program this year. At the last minute, we received a $3,000 donation in gift cards from an anonymous donor, and a $5,000 grant from the Foundation that enabled us to buy the last of the gift cards needed. Including those families supported through the FC Youth Ministry’s adopt-a-family program, we supported 120 families this year.
