Volunteer of the Month: November 2023

By Volunteer

Drew Poling

Every time that I volunteer at Heart to Heart I feel more connected with myself, other volunteers, the Heart to Heart staff, and my community. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to give back and support my community in such a welcoming and joyous space. Many aspects of my life are placed hectically upon each other and feel very chaotic, but volunteering at Heart to Heart helps to keep me grounded and in the moment. Connecting and developing relationships with others through volunteering is wonderful and any chance that I have to serve at Heart to Heart is an opportunity that I will anticipate with happiness.

We are happy to share that Guild Group RSZ members prepared 155 jars of dried bean soup jars and donated them to the Pop Up Pantry for our sites. This was a labor of love getting all this completed in one meeting – a big undertaking for sure.  Danielle at Commons at Grant was happy to be serving the residents the Bean Soup.  See photos attached.

Our Southpoint Christmas Gift Drive is beginning to take shape.  This will be our fourth year granting wishes for the children at Southpoint.  Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School will once again partner with the Pop Up Team to give the school children, along with their families and staff, an opportunity for Service Learning and giving back to our neighbors in need.

As always, our team is continually blessed and grateful for everyone who contributes to Heart to Heart and the Pop Up Pantry with their continued donations and service.  We couldn’t do all this without the dedicated individuals who give so freely to our community in need.

Volunteer Education Event

Mental Health First Aid, presented by Dr. Dan Davis

On September 28, several Heart to Heart and First Community volunteers joined us in the Weist Room at First Community South to learn more about Mental Health First Aid. Dr. Dan Davis, Forensic Psychologist, gave us a summary of common mental health issues and gave us tips for deescalating situations that may arise. He provided real-time solutions, resources to access on demand, and programs for further education opportunities. His presentation and a handout that summarizes the key points are available for viewing and download by clicking below.

Special Skills

We understand not everyone can or wants to volunteer during our regular weekly shifts, but may still want to contribute to our overall success. Heart to Heart is on the lookout for a few volunteers with specialized skills to help with projects from time to time. Please let us know if you have a particular interest or are skilled in:

  • Woodworking, DIY, Building
  • Social Media
  • Community Advocacy
  • Elementary Education
  • One time assembly projects (eg. birthday bags)

While we may not have a related project in mind at the moment, these are some needs we have encountered over time and we would love to know who might be interested in helping with these things in the future. Have another skill or interest you think may be useful? Let us know!

The Pop Up Team has worked alongside Robert Riley from Franklinton Farms for two year during the Spring and Summer seasons distributing food and fresh produce.  Robert was instrumental in having an interpreter help us at Southpark and he always brought wonderful produce to share with the neighbors.  September was Robert’s last month with Franklinton Farms.  He has taken a full time position with the State Department.  We wish him well in his new endeavor.

Our Southpoint Christmas Gift Drive is beginning to take shape.  This will be our fourth year granting wishes for the children at Southpoint.  Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School will once again partner with the Pop Up Team to give the school children, along with their families and staff, an opportunity for Serve Learning and giving back to our neighbors in need.

We also want to thank Richard Jacob for his generous donations of toiletries to the Pop Up Team each week.  So many of our neighbors do not receive these necessary items and are so very grateful for his generosity.

Volunteer of the Month: October 2023

By Volunteer

Tim O’Hanlan

I am always impressed by the grace and dignity of our customers as they face hard times and have the courage to accept our help for the sake of their families. For me, volunteering at the pantry is a humbling experience that allows me to experience our common humanity. What a gift that is! People sometimes ask, “How did you of all people become Volunteer of the Month? I’m somewhat surprised that you haven’t been kicked out.” Relentless campaigning and insincere flattery probably helped. Upon reflection, though, the single most important factor is that I was the only person on my All-Star Pantry Team who had not been awarded Volunteer of the Month. As the emerging “class clown” on my team, I bring out the best in my teammates by constantly trying their patience and making their volunteer responsibilities that much more difficult to complete. No wonder I am Volunteer of the Month. Thank you, Yohan. You could have nominated the dangerous and unwieldy red cart instead.
