Heart to Heart Sunday

Join Heart to Heart for worship at First Community Church on Sunday, November 7. Worship times as follows:

In worship, we will hear from Heart to Heart volunteers, supporters, and employees about the work of the food pantry. A special offering will also be taken to support our ministry. Because of the generosity of our anonymous donor, all of the monetary donations received will be matched up to $20,000. See below for details.

We also need volunteers for that Sunday’s food drive (see right). If you want to help receive, transport, and unload food donations, please visit our sign-up genius.

Shop Thru Volunteers Needed

If you’re interested in helping Heart to Heart food pantry, please consider our Shop Thru volunteer slot. This is an opportunity provided by Mid-Ohio Food Collective for partner agencies to pick up additional products and fresh produce at no additional cost. This is our main source of produce for the drive-thru. We are looking for more volunteers and are open to make this work for your schedule! Contact Yohan Kim for more details (ykim@fcchurch.com).

Moving Next Friday

We still need volunteers to help us move into the Crane Center next Friday. The tent will be leaving the property shortly after. We are looking for people that can do the heavy lifting and carrying next Friday, Nov 12. We will be moving most of the equipment from the tent into the niche outside Burkhart Chapel for storage. Every week we will set up Monday and tear down Thursday so the space can be used for other activities over the weekend. Sign up here to volunteer.

Current donations total $3,095!

Changes Mid-November

Beginning November 15, you will see a few volunteer shift changes. In order to accommodate other activities in the building, Monday morning stocking will be pushed back to starting at 9:30 am. For better workflow, the preshop shift held late Monday morning will be moved to Fridays, prior to the aforementioned stocking shift. We will be adding a shift at the beginning of each week to set up for the drive-thru inside the Crane Center. This will involve setting up tables and moving boxes. At the end of the week, we will add a shift for tearing down and storing the setup over the weekend. This will allow for better movement inside the building during weekend activities, especially worship services. We are grateful to the First Community Facilities staff for working with us during this transition. We will keep you abreast of changes via email and blog posts!

Changing with the Seasons

Beginning November 15, we will once again be operating from the Crane Center of the main building at 1320 Cambridge. We will move inside for warmth and safety during the colder seasons while making final plans for what we will do with our facilities in the springtime.

That means on Friday, November 12, we will need your help clearing out the tent! The shift has already been added to sign up genius. Once we clear it out and move the contents to the Crane Center, and the alcove outside Burkhart Chapel, we will have the tent removed from the property.

To allow for the myriad activities that occur inside the church’s main building, we will be making some changes to our volunteer shifts. The preschool and facilities teams have been helpful (and flexible!) in making these plans with us. Shifts will be added prior to Tuesday and after Thursday’s drive-thru to set up and tear down equipment, respectively. We will also make some of the morning volunteer shifts start later to allow for preschool traffic to clear in the morning.

Stay tuned for more information on upcoming changes as plans unfold. We understand there will be a period of adjustment, but ask that volunteers are mindful of the upcoming changes. Please reach out to Amy or Yohan if you have questions or concerns.

  • February 135
  • March 121
  • April 130
  • May 127
  • June 124
  • July 132
  • August 132
  • September 150

We continue to work with potential agency sites for the expansion of our Pop Up Pantry on Thursday afternoons. Wedgewood Village Apartments has been on hold due to staffing issues.

We completed our initial Thursday delivery to our newest site, Franklinton Farms on September 9.  As the Franklinton Farms site is seasonal, we will not be delivering food during the winter months.

Our Pop Up Pantry team is pleased to be adding a second Thursday afternoon site in October, Riverview International Center.  This site is currently being served monthly by Barb Falkenberg and Michelle McClure of our Refugee Task Force.  Our food delivery to this site will begin on Thursday, October 28.  We’re grateful for the many efforts and support of Barb, Michelle, and Amy Caskie in ensuring a seamless transition for this agency site.

Again this year, the Pop Up Pantry team will be conducting a toy and gift drive for the families and children at our Southpoint Village Apartment site.  We are excited to be partnering once again with Wickliffe Elementary School to make wishes come true for these wonderful children at Christmas.

We are blessed by the ongoing support of our dedicated volunteers and church leadership in continuing to grow this outreach ministry of Heart to Heart.

Holiday Help

Once again, this year, our much-loved Christmas Presence program has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have come up with an alternative to enable us to assist client families in need this holiday season.

Groups, families, and individuals are welcome to sponsor a family or families that request holiday assistance this year financially through the purchase of gifts for them. Sponsors will be asked to contact their sponsored family directly to get ideas for Christmas gifts and make arrangements for delivery or pick-up. There will be no suggested expenditures for each family, as we would like sponsors to help in the way they best see fit.

Clients who are in need of assistance this holiday season will be asked to notify Heart to Heart by phone or email to hearttoheart@fcchurch.com. Staff will get contact information and family make-up from the clients and pass the information along to our dedicated volunteer and social worker extraordinaire, Kitty Rohrer. Kitty will then match inquiring families with those looking to sponsor them.

We will continue to match families and sponsors through November 17. After that date, all inquiries, both clients and sponsors, will be referred to other programs by our team of resource volunteers. This small group answers emails and voicemails received through Heart to Heart’s resource line at 614-488-0681 x241. The group is made up of social workers and community advocates familiar with programs available to our clients.

We are eager to help our clients in need, but also cautious about large gatherings as the pandemic continues. We encourage both sponsor and sponsored families to follow appropriate social-distancing guidelines and wear masks, especially if unvaccinated. Hopefully, this effort will prove to be a sufficient alternative to Christmas Presence. We hope to continue the tradition of partnering with the Trading Post again next year!

If you have any questions about the program, please contact us at HearttoHeart@fcchurch.com. This information will also be available online at h2h.FCchurch.com/christmas2021.

Donor Pledges $20,000 in Matching Donations from October 1-December 31
It takes multiple moving parts to run our incredible Heart to Heart program -from volunteers, donations of food, toiletries, and paper goods by multiple community organizations, and, of course, money. Every donation received from October 1 through December 31will be matched up to $20,000.
The donors’ strong belief in the scope, direction, and relevance of this ministry is more than reaffirmed by its volunteer coordinator, Yohan Kim- have you met him?. “He is the glue that keeps all of the moving parts running smoothly”, said John McCandless, a most devoted volunteer. And so many parts: from all the generous gifts from our community to all the components within the pantry. There are 180 volunteers who divide and conquer the massive operation which ultimately brings food to our neighbors: picking up contributions, unloading trucks, restocking our pantry shelves, shoppers, produce handlers, and our check-in volunteers. Yohan said, “Sometimes I step back and look at all of our various volunteers, playing their own unique roles. It’s like watching a symphony with all of its different instruments, performing and blending to make the drive-through experience seamless and joy-filled for our neighbors!” Paul Dusseau, a long-time volunteer, talked enthusiastically about Yohan’s superior organizational skills and ability to create camaraderie and a family atmosphere. Paul said… “ he is a beautiful communicator; he is reliable, consistent, affirming and patient.”
As the outreach of Heart to Heart grows to meet the needs of our community, so also does the need for financial support. Remember your gift will be doubled through December 31. This ever-expanding program also needs more volunteers. Would you consider helping out? Abby Black, a sophomore at Upper Arlington High School, is one of our most beloved, devoted, and hard-working participants. She said, “ Yohan connects with and deeply appreciates the volunteers; he makes it fun to be a Heart to Heart volunteer!”
